Charles Burke was born about 1829 in Sweden. He first appears in US records when he enlisted in Company B, 4th Florida Infantry Regiment as a corporal on 29 July 1861 in Appalachicola. He was promoted to 5th Sergeant on 23 December 1861. He mustered out on 12 December 1862 and transferred to the Confederate Navy. After the Civil War, he was employed as a ships carpenter and married Mary Elizabeth Johnson, a native of Georgia. They had two children who survived to adulthood - Charles J. and Anna M. Charles was born in January 1864 and Anna was born in Clearwater in October 1867. The family was living in Tampa in 1870. They moved to Pensacola about 1875. In 1880, he is a widower. Charles died on 16 December 1897 in Pensacola and is buried in St. John's Cemetery. |
