Charles Theodore Cronise was born February 1, 1842, a Presbyterian of French/German descent. He graduated from Lima College in New York, joining the Union Army becoming a Captain. In 1885, Charles Cronise married widow Mrs. Charlotte Butler Messenheimer. Charles and Charlotte moved to Pensacola from Indiana for her health. They did not have children, but adopted several. Friends, Joseph and Emmaline Smith died leaving their children, Clifford and Esther Mary Smith, which Charles and Charlotte Cronise adopted in 1901. In 1903, they adopted Carrie Belle Jones and Clifford Cronise. Charles and Charlotte built their home at 1308 East Gadsden Street. Charles Theodore Cronise died June 27, 1895. His wife would not allow a grave maker to be placed in St. John‘s Cemetery, preferring to give the money to her church. Later, someone placed him a marker. He is buried next to his wife Charlotte Butler Cronise, her brother Jerome Butler and his wife Bertha Knoll Butler, their son John Regan Butler, and Wm Carroll George. | |
