George Washington Nelson, also known as "Black Wash" Nelson, was born in Sumter, AL to Thomas Nelson and Catherine Hall Nelson in 1833. She died in 1834. He married Nancy Jane of Mobile, AL in 1852, and over the next 30 years with whom had 12 children. The couple resided in Baldwin Co, AL. In 1861, he volunteered on 1 May as part of Col. Miller's reinforcement battalion for the 1st FL Infantry. He was placed in Co. D, fighting in every engagement from Perryville through at least the Atlanta campaign, where he was wounded and furloughed. He died from Bright's disease. | |
