David Benjamin Nettles was born November 13, 1874 in Colleton County, South Carolina. He married Lillian R. Brunson. They were the parents of seven children: Benjamin Rudolph (1905-1980), Roberta Page (1906-1968), Lillian B. “LeLa“ (1909-1997; married Paul Cummins; buried in St. John‘s), Elizabeth (1911-2007), Marguerite (1912-1986; married Murlen Alfred Mason), William Overton (1915-2005) and Leslie Nettles (1921-2008). David B. Nettles died December 9, 1944 in Pensacola. From obituary: “Captain David Benjamin Nettles, 70, died Saturday at his home, 908 East Gonzalez Street….lived in Pensacola for the last 21 years…A retired shipmaster…master of merchant ships in WWI and followed that profession for 45 years…a Spanish American War Veteran…survivors: wife Mrs. Lillian Roberta Nettles; three sons, Benjamin Rudolph Nettles of Pensacola, Sgt. Leslie B. Nettles in Italy; T. Sgt. Wm Overton Nettles in the South Pacific; four daughters, Miss Roberta Page Nettles, Mrs. John P. Cummins, Mrs. O.L. Scholls and Mrs. Murlen Mason, all of Pensacola.” He is buried next to his wife Lillian R. Nettles, daughters Roberta P. Nettles and Elizabeth Scholls. |
