Florence Ferriss Cole Hatfield, age 93, of Pensacola, died of natural causes on Thursday, April 21, 2011. Born December 2, 1917 in Nashville, Tennessee, Mrs. Hatfield has resided in Pensacola since 1919. She was preceded in death by her parents, Marjorie Taylor Ferriss and Harry Pitt Ferriss, her brother, Harry Willard Ferriss and sister, Majorie Nolan Ferriss Ozburn. Mrs. Hatfield was the mother of one daughter, Sandra Cole Avitable, who passed away in 1991, and wife of James Ross Cole and William C. Hatfield who died in 1995. Mrs. Hatfield graduated from Pensacola High School in 1936. After college Mrs. Hatfield taught Kindergarten for 12 years. She owned several businesses including Exotic Flowers, a children's boutique, and co-owner of The Shop for Pappagallo. She was awarded for devotion to her volunteer work with the Veteran's Hospital and the American Red Cross giving over 1000 hours of her time as a volunteer. Throughout her life Mrs. Hatfield was a proud historian belonging to a number of historical organizations such as Colonial Dames, Daughters of the Revolution, Daughters of the Confederacy, The Genealogy Society, and a docent for the Pensacola Historical Society. She loved sharing her knowledge and history of Pensacola, and America's First Ladies. Florence Hatfield was a member of First Presbyterian Church for most of her life. She led and participated in many Bible studies as well as teaching children's Sunday School and volunteering at the Presbyterian Church Resale Shop. Mrs. Hatfield lived a long and fulfilling life. She loved her family deeply, enjoyed countless friendships, was a wonderful dancer, an avid historian and antique collector, a talented quilter, enjoyed playing Bridge, loved flowers and cats, and was a devout follower of Jesus Christ. Mrs. Hatfield is survived by her grandchildren, Timothy Ross Avitable, of Tallahassee, and Amie Avitable Amacher, of Atlanta, and two great-granddaughters, Sandra Allison Amacher and Kimberly Anne Amacher of Atlanta. She is further survived by her nieces, Shirley Ferriss Gray, of Pensacola, and Sue Ozburn Miller of Okemos, Michigan as well as other relatives and friends. Memorial contributions can be made to the Child Discovery Center of First Presbyterian Church of Pensacola in her honor.. Graveside services for Mrs. Hatfield will be held at St. John's Cemetery on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. Waters & Hibbert are in charge of arrangements. |
