John Hall Sherril, Jr. 80 of Pensacola died Sunday, December 7, 1997.  Mr. Sherrill was born in Pensacola in 1917.  He attended local schools, the Culver Military Academy and Washington and Lee University, where graduated Phi Beta Kappa.  After graduate study at the National Academy for scouting, he became a Scout Executive in Griffin, GA.  Mr. Sherrill was drafted as a private in the U.S. Army; after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he attended the Officer Training School and graduated as a 2nd Lt., serving in the 3rd Armored Division.  In the European Theatre, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant; during his tour of duty he was captured and was a prisoner of war for ten months.  After the war, he and his family resided in Atmore, AL where he operated a cattle business in Walnut Hill, FL.  He was a Charter member of the Atmore Rotary Club until 1966.  In that year, John and his family moved to Pensacola to become the first Director of the Department of Cooperative Education and Placement at the University of West Florida, retiring from that role in 1986.  For 31 years, he was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church; as a Rotary Club member he became a Paul Harris Fellow, and served various community organizations.  Survivors include his wife, Joe Lorraine Estes Sherrill; sister, Mary Alice "Polly" Baranco of Pensacola; sister-in-law, Senie Sherrill; son, John H. "Jack" Sherrill, III of Pensacola; daughters, Jean Hale of Atlanta, GA, Rita Salter of Gulf Breeze and Susan Sherrill of Sarasota; six grandchildren; and three great grand-grandchildren.  Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m., Tuesday, December 9, 1997 at First Presbyterian Church, East Gregory Street, with Dr. Rush Otey, Dr. Al Reese and the Rev. Erik Funk officiating.  Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.  The family will receive friends in the church parlora following services.  Memorials may be made to Manna Food Bank, Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen and First Presbyterian Church.
