Joseph F. "Chopper" Smith, Lt. US Navy (Ret.), 91, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 23, 2000.  Mr. Smith was born in Oswego, NY and has resided in Pensacola since 1927 except for the time his Navy duties took him elsewhere.  His Navy career spanned over 30 years.  He served as an aviation machinist with dedication and distinction in seaplanes and aboard carriers, during both WWII and the Korean Conflict, serving in the Pacific Theatre.  He was a Pearl Harbor Survivor and a member of the Pearl Harbor Assoc. He retired at Ellyson Field in 1956.  Mr. Smith was a parishioner of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Brownsville and was well  known as a member of the Catholic community of Pensacola.  He was a member of the PGA as a teaching professional.  "Chopper" Smith, as known by his many friends, will be greatly missed as an avid golfer, well known by his ability to teach the techniques of the game, his sense of humor and his love of people.  He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Donna Parslow.  "Chopper" is survived bh his loving wife of 67 years, Josie Fell Smith; daughters, Alice Ann Parslow, Frances McAdam and husband, Tom, all of Pensacola; son John "Jack" E. Smith and wife, Virginia of Cummings, GA; 12 grandchildren; and 24 great grandchildren.  The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 26, 2000 at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Brownville with Father Oliver Barrett and Msgr. Raymond Mullins officiating.  Interment will follow at St. John's Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be grandsons, Matt and Mickey Parslow, Joe Smith, Jo Ed McAdam, Tom McAdam, Jr. and Rick Bicker.  Honorary pallbearers will be Roy Burnette, Warren Oliver, Robert King, Henry Dugger, William McAdam and Lyle Lewis.  Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.  A visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. with a rosary said at 6 p.m. at Oak Lawn Funeral Home.  Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimers Family Services, 3454 Olive Rd., Pensacola,FL 32514 or Hospice of Northwest Florida, 2001 N.
