John M. Pinney was born in May of 1813 in Baltimore, Maryland. He and his wife Mary J. Pinney are found in the 1850 and 1860 census of Pensacola. Their known children were: John L. (1839-1914, buried in St. Michael's cemetery), Laura L. (born ca1843), Samuel L. (born ca1845) and Rebecca Jane Pinney (born ca1851). Wife Mary J. Pinney must have died between 1860 and 1870. John Pinney died May 31, 1892 in Pensacola. His tombstone says "Captain". From Daily News June 1, 1892: "There passed from earth in this city yesterday one of Pensacola's oldest citizens, Capt. John Pinney, in the 79th year of his life. The deceased was born in Baltimore in May, 1813. From the age of 14 he followed the sea. In the year 1834 he came to Pensacola on the U.S. ship Vandalia. He married a Miss Mealy in this city in 1837. The issue to the marriage was four children, two of whom only are his immediate survivors. These are Mr. John L. Pinney, city clerk, and Miss Laura Pinney, both of this city." Capt. John M. Pinney is buried in lot with the Lyle family plot. (he is not listed in cemetery book)
