Brooks Thornton, 91, of Pensacola, died Sunday, January 24, 1999.  Mr. Thornton was born on September 18, 1907, at his grandparents Robinson's home on the Chipola River North of Clarksville, FL.  Brooks lived in the Milton area for most of his childhood.  His parents, Luther Austin Thornton and Beaulah Robinson had turpentine stills throughout Northwest Florida.  In 1922 he worked at Douglas Florist in Pensacola.  After marrying Carolyn Crosby they opened their own florist on the corner of 12th Avenue and Cervantes.  It was in operation until 1987.  From 1960 until 1980, Brooks ran an auction shop called the Attic.   Even after his retiring from both businesses, he still stayed busy making many cuttings of plants for himself and others, and checking out area flea markets for interesting things he liked.  He was a colorful character and an independent inventive soul all throughout his life,  He is survived by daughters, Jessie Lew Mahoney of Bethesda, MD, Patricia Born of Pensacola, sons-in-law, James E. Mahoney of Bethesda, MD, Thomas Born of Pensacola; sister, Carrie B. Owens of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, James Mahoney of Nashua, NH; Colleen Mahoney of Silver Springs, MD, Kathleen McNickle of Rockville, MD, Christine Kahane of Newton, MA, John Born of Pensacola, Rachel Schill of  Pensacola; great grandchildren, Kyle, Brendan and Colleen McNickle, Kaitlin, John, Patricia Mahoney; Joshua, Rebecca, Zachary; Jacob and Leah Kahane; Madison and Carolyn Schill.  Graveside services will be 3:00 P.M. Friday, January 29, 1999 at St. John's Cemetery (Belmont and "G" Street) with the Rev. C. Edward Britton officiating.  Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice, in Mr. Thornton's memory.
