Bushnell lived in Bagdad at one point but moved to Pensacola.  He worked as a cashier, auditor, and bookkeeper.  

His brother, Richard M. Bushnell, was Captain of Company H, First Florida Infantry, which was one of two volunteer infantry companies organized in Pensacola in 1898.  The war was over before it ever saw action.
