Samuel Lawrence Clifford was born February 6, 1844, one of four known children of Samuel Goodridge Clifford (1812-1851) and his wife Cordelia Fell (1822-1875). Captain Clifford was a ship pilot in Pensacola for 42 years. He was active in the local Pilot Benevolent Association. On July 3, 1866 in Escambia County, Samuel Clifford married Isabella Priscilla Davidson. To Samuel and Isabella Clifford, seven known children were born in Pensacola: Gertrude (1867-1944; married Captain James Alfred Bazzell; buried in St. John's), Willie F. (female), Clara (1871-1902; married W.J. Doyle), Samuel Goodrick Clifford (1874-1937; buried 4-52) Mary (1876-1969, married James Creary; buried in St. John's), Lawrence Harkley Clifford (1879-1941; married Ola Berta), and John Sidney Clifford (March 18, 1881-Oct. 4, 1918). While visiting his daughter in DeFuniak Spring, Samuel Clifford died on March 26, 1914. The death notice of Captain Samuel L. Clifford is in the Pensacola paper of March 27. He is buried next to his wife Isabella, son Lawrence Harkley Clifford and his wife Ola, son John Sidney Clifford, grandson James Creary, and marker for grandson James Clifford.
