James Gibson Chestnut, known as “Jim”, was born April 4, 1846 in Santa Rosa County, son of James and Mary Chestnut. He joined the Confederate Florida 10th Infantry Company A. After the war, James stated working for the railroad company, moving to Escambia County. On December 27, 1866 in Escambia County, James Chestnut married Emily Mackey. In the Brent community, Jim and Emily had eleven children: Elizabeth (1867-1946; married Wm Wiley Lansdon), Nancy (1869-1966; married Alexander Thompson), James Allen (1872-1947; policeman; married Ola Hobbs), William King (1873-1943; policeman; married Lena Hardy), Mary Matildia (1875-1957; married Wm Benjamin Miller), Daisy (1876-1936; married Daniel Steven Colley), Osier (1879-1946; policeman; married Fannie Milford, with second wife Pearl Robinson), Hannah Emily (1882-1981; married Marion Franklin Cravey), Lawrence (1884-1907; married Irene Milstead), Alex (1886-1909), and John Monroe Chestnut (1889-1953). Three of the sons served with the Pensacola Police Department. James Gibson Chestnut died May 7, 1932, buried with full military honors. His obituary is listed in the Journal, Tuesday, May 10. He is buried next to his wife.
