Enlisted for the Civil War on April 24, 1862 at Madison, FL. He became a private of the 5th Florida Infantry Regiment Company D. Promoted to Sergeant on November 16, 1862, to 1st Sergeant on November 29, 1862 and elected 2nd Lt. of the Company on January 17, 1863. He was captured on July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg and imprisoned at Fort McHenry, Maryland; Johnson's Island, Ohio; Point Lookout, Maryland and Fort Delaware, Delaware where he was released June 12, 1865 after taking the oath of allegiance to the United States.

Upon his release, he came to Taylor Co, FL where he worked as a school teacher.  In 1865, he marred Nancy Jane Hendry, who was another school teacher.  He was the first School Superintendent for Taylor County.  Also, he made the original survey and plat of Perry, FL.  He was the pastor of mny early Baptist churchs--Pleasant Grove, Perry, Macedonia.  

He resided at Shady Grove much of the time and served as postmaster.  

He departed Taylor County in 1883 and moved to Pensacola, where he practiced law until his death in 1893.
