Kenneth Fulghum, Sr. followed in his father's footsteps as a renown builder in Pensacola. At the age of five, he was busy in the construction business. While his father, Stephen F. Fulghum was directing the construction of Sacred Heart Hospital in 1916, he was the water boy and mule tender. He actually saw that the mule was moved in the right direction to power the lift. Fulghum was the youngest of six sons in a construction family and his father taught each of the boys a trade. Not long after his mule tending, he became an accomplished brick layer. In 1922, he married the former Kathleen Van Pelt of Pensacola. In 1934, he became an independent builder, devoting himself to homes and remodeling of downtown storefronts. His first big commercial job came in 1940 when he was contracted to build a large warehouse for Armstrong Cork Company. Thereafter, his business expanded to include the former Gulf Power office building on Pace Boulevard, the old Escambia County Court House Annex, the former Annex to the Citizens and Peoples Bank, the former Escambia County Health Center, and large north wing annex for the former Scottish Rite Building on Wright Street. The family resided in the Ferry Pass area. He was the father of two children- Kathleen (John Hinman) and Kenneth Fulghum, Jr.
