Early Sunday morning, February 3, Charles Merritt was called to his eternal reward after a long, wonderful life in Pensacola, Florida. A Pensacola native, Charles was born on April 28, 1914. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Martha (Timberlake), his sister Martha, his first wife Winnie, and his second wife Suzanne. Charles is survived by his stepdaughter Julianne Whitten and her husband Buddy; his brother Lucius Merritt; and numerous nieces and nephews. During WWII, Charles served in the U.S. Army in the European theater, and was employed at NAS when he returned to Pensacola. Over the years, Charles was an active and productive member of many local organizations. He was a charter member of the Pensacola Camellia Club; Pensacola Country Club where he played golf as often as possible; and an enthusiastic University of Florida Bull Gator. However, Charles' main passion was his membership at the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Pensacola where he was a member for 86 years. During that time, he held every office of service in the church. This church and its members were of the utmost importance in his life. The family would like to extend their thanks to the entire staff at Azalea Trace Retirement Community where Charles and Suzanne lived for 13 years. Their tireless efforts on his behalf were much appreciated. We would also like to thank Covenant Hospice for their help during Charles' final days. A private burial will be held on Friday, February 8, followed by a celebration of Charles' life at the First Presbyterian Church at 2:30 pm with Dr. Randon Jackson and Rev. Frank Beall officiating. A reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 33 East Gregory Street, Pensacola, FL 32502 or Covenant Hospice, 6479 Caroline Street, Suite B, Milton, FL 32570.
