Early Rector of Christ Church, Leading Citizen and Educator

Submitted by The Rev. Dr. Matt Currin

The Rev. Dr. John Jackson Scott was rector of Christ Church for forty years spanning the Civil War and the occupation of Pensacola by Union Troops. He came to Christ Church from Quincy, Florida in 1848, left for three years prior to the Civil War to be a chaplain in the military stationed in Mobile. He came back to Pensacola and at the outbreak of the Civil War he took the congregation to Montgomery and while there he established the Church of the Holy Comforter which is still a strong and vital parish. He returned to Pensacola in 1864 to see most of the city destroyed but Christ Church on Seville Square was still standing and became a beacon of hope for those who returned from the Exile.

Christ Church grew and flourished under his strong leadership and the church building was restored and expanded in 1879. One of the stained glass windows he had installed over the altar, The Light of the World, is known as one of the earliest stained glass works of art in Florida and reputed to be one of the most valuable in the nation. Dr. Scott retired in 1889 but continued as the Rector Emeritus until his death in 1895 at the age of eighty. He was a colorful, highly respected and distinguished priest of the church and was nominated for bishop several times and served in a leadership position in the Diocese of Florida as well as in the Pensacola community.

He and his wife started one of the first schools in Pensacola. Engraved on his impressive monument are: Sagerdos, Theologiae, Doctor.

He died in 1895 and was buried in St. Johns Cemetery 1 North, Section 13.
