In Escambia County on February 7, 1900, he married Georgia Frierson.  Her husband‘s obituary says “former Miss Georgia Smith“.  From front page of Journal Thursday March 14: “Oliver J. Semmes Sr. 80, a member of Escambia County Board of Public Instruction for 30 years, retired businessman…died Wednesday…born in Mobile…came to Pensacola February 14, 1898, after graduating from Auburn as a electrical engineer…son of late Oliver J. Semmes of Mobile, long time judge of Mobile, and the grandson of Adm. Semmes, who command the famous Alabama in the Confederate Navy.  His wife, the former Miss Georgia Smith died in April 1955...survivors: son Oliver J. Semmes Jr.; two daughter, Mrs. Charles W. Crawford and Mrs. William B. Whaley of California; eight grandchildren…Fisher-Pou in charge.”  He is buried next to his wife Georgia Frierson Semmes (one stone), son Oliver John Semmes Jr. and his wife Kate Greenwood Semmes (one stone).
