Jack Walter Lurton, 80, of Pensacola died Saturday, October 10, 1998, in a local hospital following a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Bettie Anna Adams of Pensacola; two children, a son-in-law and daughter-in-law, James Marshall and Susan Lurton Conrad, Jack Walter and Mary Lou Burks Lurton; grandchildren, Frederick Marshall and Laura Conrad, James Walter Conrad, Spence Hyatt Conrad, Jack Walter Lurton III and Douglas Edward Lurton; one great-grandchild, James Crawford Conrad. Jack was a graduate of Pensacola High School, where he played on the baseball and golf teams and participated in numerous other sports. He was a former city champion in both golf and tennis and was an avid swimmer. He was a longstanding member of the Pensacola County Club and was a member of the Pensacola Sports Association. Jack was always proud of his family heritage, being a member of five generations of Lurtons in Pensacola. He served as a Captain in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He returned to Pensacola and served as a banker at American National and Florida National Banks. He then became vice president of Muldon Motor Company for 30 years and retired in 1983. While in the business community he served on the Chamber of Commerce and was an active Rotarian. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. John's Cemetery with Dr. James Pleitz officiating. Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or your favorite charity if you wish. | |
