JOEL CHAMBLESS HORNE, SR. 1872-1944 Funeral services for Joel Chambless Horne, Sr., who died Monday morning at his home, 1345 East Lee Street, Pensacola, FL will be conducted at 4;30 PM Tuesday, with the Rev. A. E. Schafer officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Pensacola, FL, with Lloyd-Fauria directing. Mr. Horne was born in Darbyville, Baker County, FL on November 12, 1872. He is predeceased in death by three siblings, Mary A. Glover, Thomas K. and Frank S. Horne, and his parents William Payne Lawrence Horne and SaraAnn Texas Chambless Horne and his grandparents, Duke William and Mary Emelia Lawrence Horne of Tarboro, North Carolina. His grandfather, Duke Horne, was a covered wagon pioneer 1828-9 to the FL panhandle settling first in Jackson County FL to begin a mercantile business, farming, producing naval stores and then operating a grist mill at Vernon, FL. The grist mill in Washington County, is at the site of Florida's Falling Waters State Park. Duke was also on the the founders of the first school, Marianna Acadeny, in the area in 1832-4. Joel's father, William P. Horne with his wife, Sara, and mother, Emelia moved to Baker County after his father's death. Joel was one of nine children. He began working for the railway, traveling across the FL panhandle to Selma, AL, where he met and married Bessie Howdon, in Selma, AL on March 7, 1903. Bessie's father was a railroad engineer. Mr. Horne was the conductor on a steam railway for many years. In 1917, he lived in Mobile, AL and worked as a switchman at the Choctaw Yards. After leaving the railway about 1920, he resided in Chipley, FL before returning to Pensacola. In Pensacola, he owned a small neighborhood grocery store near his home on Lee Street. The grocery, Horne's Market, was located at 1322 North 14th Avenue. Mr. Horne is survived by his wife, Bessie H. Horne; his three sons, John W. of Savannah, GA, Joel C. Jr., of Pensacola; and Charles H. of the Coast Guard; three daughters, Miss Edna E. Horne and Miss Katie L. Horne of Pensacola, and Lynn-Mrs. J. L. Pennell of Jacksonville, FL; three brothers, Cary B. of Pensacola, Hugh M. of Cincinnati, OH; and William L. of Gainesville, FL; three sisters, Carrie F. Chambliss of Wauchula, FL; Sara Norris of Jacksonville; Nan Hansard of Atlanta, GA, and several grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Dr. A. T. Hoffman, Wiley J. McDavid, B. V. Holland, Max Horne, John R. Jones and Earl Westmark.
